RING-TAILED LEMUR (LEMUR CATTA) CONSERVATION PROJECT IN RENIALA STATION
In recent years, the population of ring-tailed lemurs in Madagascar has decreased by more than 97%! The latest research has shown that only about 2,500 of them left in the wild. That’s less than in the world’s zoos! This is all the more shocking as until recently ring-tailed lemurs were considered one of the most common lemurs.
The reason for such a huge decline in the population is the uncontrolled development of agriculture, poaching and the wild animal trade in Madagascar. It is not uncommon to catch lemurs and show them at fairs, by roads, as a tourist attraction. Do not pay for such services during our trips to exotic countries! The demand for them increases illegal trade and contributes to species extinction!
Ring-tailed lemurs confiscated or burned while burning the grass are sent to the Lemur Rescue Center – Reniala. Here, under the supervision of specialists, they recover and are released back to nature. The Center also conducts an extensive educational campaign for children and adults!
